I'm a contemporary dancer, performing artist, and choreographer making work in my hometown of New York City and since 2015 in London. I was one of Moving Digits: Augmented Dance for Engaged Audience artists and awarded a Creative Europe travel grant to join the Oulu Dance Hack presenting collaborative work at Oulu Museum of Art in Finland (2019).
For my own work, I create research-driven, interdisciplinary performances blending social experiments, live performance, and innovating with digital media. I like working with new technologies and I'm particularly interested in art, science and embodiment.
I frequently play with the expectations of my audience, using humour to convey political concerns, and I've completed an MA in Performance Studies from Tisch, New York University with distinction.
Right now, I'm developing a new show Rootless Node; my current show Touching From A Distance first performed in London in December 2019 will hopefully resume touring in Fall 2021. The research and development of Rootless Node is supported by Arts Council England.
In November 2020 I started developing new somatic movement digital classes.
I have a once a year newsletter where I share what’s to come for me and information on other artists I personally like.
Commercial dance credits include dancing alongside musical artists Shaggy, Chaka Khan and working with noise band Sonic Youth, iconic interactive media artist Scott Snibbe and film director Harmony Korine. Recent performances of Zjana's own work have taken place at Mercat de les Flors (Barcelona, Spain), as part of Grec Fest La Caldera (Barcelona, Spain), Complesso Monumentale di Santa Sofia (Salerno, Italy), The Place (London, UK), Turner Contemporary Museum (Margate, UK), Sheung Wan Culture Centre (Hong Kong), Oulu Museum of Art (Finland), Roundhouse (London, UK), Stone Nest (London, UK), and SPACE (London, UK).
